Four of the founders (from left to right): Tamas, Robert, Andras and Sandor)
5 Stars Tours was founded in 1980 by five adventorous young men: Tamas Kemeny, Robert Kis, Andras Kiss, Sandor Kovacs and Szabolcs Korom. It all started with a bachelor party. The party was held in a small cruiseship which went from Budapest to Szentendre. Besides the great night the ship provided, they were amazed by the view along the river. The father of Janos was a boatman and he tried to pique his son’s interest towards shipping before. Szabolcs later recognized that his father was right and he didn’t say wacky things.
After the wedding and the honeymoon, Tamas, Robert, Andras, Sandor and Szabolcs sat together and the idea of founding the 5 Stars Tours popped out of their head. And where did the name 5 Stars Tours came from? 5 Stars could symbolize the quality of the services nowadays, but originally, the word 'Stars' were made up of the initials of their first name. They agreed to take a shot on establishing a small company which deals with cruising on river Danube. They hired two medium-sized cruise ships and got in contact with several travel agencies. The business was very succesful from the beginning. What was the secret? The prices. Other shipping companies provided their services in the same category for much more money. Those high prices were not affordable for so many people who otherwise loved travelling with ship. That was why the number of guests at 5 Stars Tours grew so quickly.
First, the ships were travelling only to Esztergom and Szentendre. By the time, they tried to serve a bigger target group, organizing trips to Vienna and Belgrad. It is not surprising that this happened after the and of the communist regime. In the season of 1995-96, the fishing tourism was flourishing so the founders of the 5 Stars Tours decided to organize a tour to the Black Sea, Bulgaria. From this decision came the idea of the Black Forest Route trip. The castles and the scenery there are more than beautiful. Tamas, Robert, Andras, Sandor and Szabolcs thought they gave it a try. And they did that right. People liked their idea, not to mention their prices again!
In 2010, the fathers of the company named their children, Dora, Aniko, Nikolett and Klaudia the new leaders of 5 Stars Tours.
